Estimate yearly EV electricity cost. Background Electric vehicle usage is growing quickly in Australia. Whilst I can't yet justify buying a new EV, I want to be ready when my current car reaches end-of-life, so I created this calculator. Since I don't own an EV, I can't use my own data as I did with the Car Running Cost Calculator. However, I can use the same approach and get quotes and estimate prices to get an better idea. For this purpose I've used data on the Telsa Model 3 and the MG4 Excite 51. The assumption is I travel roughly 14,000km a year (as I previously have) with around 4,000km travel on highway/country roads each year. Below I'll detailed further assumptions. NOTE: The Car Price should be entered as a single total amount. All other amounts should be entered as the amount for a year. The calculator will extend out the yearly amounts for the number of years entered. Why would anyone want to know the cost per kilometre for owning a car?
To help them make better buying decisions. Is it better to own and run a car? Is it better to take a bus,
taxi, or uber? If there's more than one person in the car, is it better to take the car or public transport?
Is it better to buy a cheap second car to help maintain the price of the main car? What's a
car cost if I hardly use it and mostly take public transport? Perhaps the most single obvious answer I would like to know is, is an electric vehicle going to save me money? The knowledge gained through working out the cost per kilometre of running your car can help you make better and more informed opinions when it comes to matters that affect the public. No matter what your reason, at least now you have the Electric Vehicle Running Cost Calculator and your own car running costs which can assist in answering the question, what is the running cost of my electric vehicle per kilometre? How you use that information is up to you. |

Electric Vehicle Price
For the Electric Vehicle Price I used the Tesla site and MG site on the 11 Feb 20234 for pricing,
excluding the first year's registration fee, as that's entered into the registration field.
Registration The amount you pay for car registration each year. The examples use the amount from the VicRoads site. Insurance Used AAMI for insurance quotes. For a male, living in Templestowe, no accidents, age 60, work/study 5+ days a week. No finance, private use, up to 15km, driven 3 or more times during peak each week. Service The service costs for electric vehicles is quote over multiple years. A figure for each car was calculated for a year. Electricity
By far the hardest figure to estimate is the amount of electricity you'll use. To make things even more difficult
highway driving, which is usually done in big hits when we gone of road trips, consumes far more energy at
higher speeds. Whereas with internal combustion cars, fuel usage is lower on country trips. I'd suggest
estimating your electricity costs for country trips and your electricity costs for daily commutes and
then add the two together. Tyres For the price of tyres, I was going to go for the cheapest, but in the end I use Michellan and that's what I went for on the Jax website and assumed tyres will last 50,000km. Main Battery In general, you can leave this value at zero unless you feel you'll need to replace your main battery because of your usage patterns. If that's the case, work out a yearly estimate for the main battery. Auxiliary Battery Left as zero. Repairs Left as zero Other Left as zero. For example, if you install a faster home charger. Tolls Left a zero Parking Left as zero Fines Left as zero. You know you're going to get one. Years For years I've used 10. If you want to calculate the number of years you've owned your car you can use the Days Between Dates calculator which shows the number of years between two dates. Kilometres For kilometres I've regularly driving 14,000km per year for some years. This figure is also used in calculating the electricity cost so keep that in mind. Car related calculators
