Car Versus Public Transport |
||
Is it cheaper to use a car or public transport? The answer is not easy to determine.
The Car Versus Public Transport Calculator enables you to work out the most cost effective
option for your situation. People are often very susprised at the results. We're told so often
public transport is cheaper than using a car, but often this is not the case, even though
public transport is heavily subsidised. I've been surprised by the results and you may well be
as well. |

Car Versus Public Transport Calculator Instructions The Car Versus Public Transport Calculator has been written to help compare the cost of using public transport versus using a car. Links have been provided to other calculators and sites which can assist in providing information for this calculator. Knowing when it is cheaper to use public transport versus using a car will hopefully save you money. Included is the ability to enter time. Sometimes public transport can be as quick as using a car, but often a car is faster and more convenient. Depending on how you value your time and what price you put on your time, can be taken into account when using the calculator. Google Maps is an excellent tool to help with estimating travel times. If you enter the start and end locations, Google Maps can provide and estimate of the distance and time for using a car, or using public transport. The Petrol Cost Calculator app can be used to quickly estimate how much it costs to drive a car per kilometre using the cost of petrol and the litres per 100km your car uses. The Car Running Cost Calculator provides a more extensive tool which takes into account most of the costs of running and owning a car. Calculating the value of your time is probably the hardest thing to do. Governments do it all the time to justify the services they provide. For example I read once public libraries use a figure of $7 per visit as the value they bring to the community. How you use your time whilst travelling may provide you value. On public transport who hasn't heard those business people providing probably confidential information whilst travelling, or worse, people sharing intimate details of their personal lives. You can do more on public transport, but you have more privacy in a car. If you just want to compare your out of pocket costs then you may wish to leave the time value as zero. Break-even The break-even distance is the distance as which taking public transport becomes more cost effective than taking a car. The break-even calculation does not take into account an hourly rate if it is entered. The break-even calculation only considers the public transport fare, number of passengers, and cost per kilometre. It really is interesting to see how the break-even distance increases for car use as the fare increases (concession versus full fare, different zones), or the number of passengers increases.
